Phideaux is mystery; it is hysteria and humour. It is a band centered around several childhood friendships and the music of Phideaux Xavier. We are refugees from a time when rock and roll was counter-cultural and have come together to make music for the pure art of it. Ours is a dark wave of progressive music for the post-punk generation. The mesmerizing and eclectic sounds of Phideaux have been described as funny, serious, doomy, derivative, innovative, pretentious, goth-tinged space folk “prog” rock... We’d rather not pigeonhole, but will invite you to sample our unearthly delights. There are links to myriad reviews which will alternately tell you of our genius and ineptitude. Know this: We are influenced by mellotrons and flutes and keyboard heavy music. We love dual lead guitar and power chords. Syncopation and tricky time signatures are sometimes utilized and always there is melody to be hummed, riffs to invade your ears and mind. We try to tell stories with our words, and though we often might fail, if we can spark an image or metaphor we are happy.

Our output is wildly uneven, although we love all of our albums, they each represent a different side, another piece of the puzzle. They are highly recommended for headphone listening, but beware, there’s madness in these songs!

UPDATE 06/28/2009

Summer Solstice 2009 saw the release of our newest album, “Number Seven”. This album is a continuation of the long form compositions found on Doomsday Afternoon and Chupacabras. It represents another foray into progressive rock, with perhaps a good dollup of chamber jazz and classic rock. For this release, we stayed completely in-house, inviting no outside musicians to contribute. We wanted to see what we could cook up with our live band. I think you will be surprised! See the recent interview on ProgArchives.com here.

Early in August we are performing at the Three Rivers Progressive Rock Festival in Pittsburgh, PA. We are humbled to say we are on the bill with IQ, Crack The Sky, It Bites, Glass Hammer, Singularity, Edensong and several other exciting acts. For tickets and more information on 3RP click here. On August 6, we will be in Brooklyn, NY at Club Europa for a gig with Edensong and 3rDegree. Gig is from 7 until midnight and the address is 98 Meserole Ave. Brooklyn, N.Y. 11222.

Additionally, we will have a song called Strange Cloud on the next Colossus/Musea project, a 3 CD set based on Dante’s Purgatory to be released later in the summer (we hear...). This song will also be available on our album “7 ½” which is slated to come out toward the end of the year.

A special note about our album 313: We have sold out the initial run and there are currently no plans to restock this title, although it is still available on iTunes and your favourite download portals.
